Purpose and goal

The project is a prestudy aimed at investigating the technical and organizational conditions for automated bus depots, using third-party technology instead of vehicle-based technology. The project is coordinated by RISE, which also contributes with research expertise. Other partners include Nobina and Unikie. The solution implements infrastructure-based automation in a specific bus depot and communicates by using standardized ISO interfaces.

Expected effects and result

The prestudy should lay the foundation for a larger project and create a better understanding of the challenges that need to be addressed, as well as the stakeholders that need to be involved in a larger system project. In addition to the final report, the prestudy will deliver a mapping of the operational changes that is needed for automated ranking of buses at the existing depot, as well as the change process required for a safe and effective implementation of a fully automated depot.

Planned approach and implementation

This prestudy is conducted in five different work packages over a period of 8 months, based on one or more study visits on site at the depot. The work packages are first organized into a work package for project management and then based on the questions we have to prepare for the next step. We investigate, among other things, technical conditions, legal aspects, regulations, financial incentives, labor law issues and work organization and, finally, we develop a plan for a larger pilot.
