Purpose and goal

Food producer Kavli and startup FoodFacts will together develop and pilot test a digital tool for healthy product development within the planetary boundaries. Detailed sustainability and health data shall be integrated and are analyzed already in the early development stage of food products, thereby guiding product developers in developing sustainable and healthy alternatives.

Expected effects and result

The project is expected to result in a first version of a commercial service for food manufacturers enabling the modelling of a the product´s health and sustainability profile already in the development stage. The tool shall enable an overview of the consequences on climate, water, biodiversity and nutritional health coming from of the choice of ingredients, packaging, manufacturing and transport, by interactively linking these to research-based databases regarding the impact.

Planned approach and implementation

The tool is developed in collaboration between Kavli and FoodFacts, and tested in a wider group of selected producers, of which Coop is one in its role as brand owner. The project has five steps. First, the relevance of the intended functions for the target group is verified, followed by definition and testing of calculation methods and data sources. Next, the product development and assortment analysis tools are developed, and finally the tool is prepared for commercialization.
