Project duration September 2024 - September 2025
Status Completed
Venture Sustainable food system - cutting edge initiative
Call Everyday food of the future - explore visionary ideas for sustainability and competitiveness

Important results from the project

The project´s main objective was achieved: a commercially available service for manufacturers enabling modeling of a product’s health and sustainability profile during the development phase, without expert knowledge. Choices on ingredients, packaging, production, and transport are linked to research-based databases concerning climate, water, biodiversity, and nutritional health. Several sub-goals were also fulfilled, including a tool for analyzing the impacts of an entire product range.

Expected long term effects

The tool is expected to increase knowledge and awareness of health and sustainability effects during the product development phase among food producers. This, in turn, should help accelerate the use of more sustainable and healthier ingredients and product compositions. The close collaboration between Kavli as the producer and FoodFacts as the technical developer has also created strong conditions for further development of the tool in areas highly relevant to producers.

Approach and implementation

The project included workshops with project partners Kavli and FoodFacts, as well as external experts from, among others, RISE, Stockholm Resilience Center, Chalmers, Orkla and Coop Sverige to agree on data and indicators. Technical development of the tool has been carried out through an iterative process with regular feedback from product developers and sustainainability experts at Kavli, Orkla, and Coop Trading, along with continuous testing based on a representative sample of products.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
