Purpose and goal
Gothenburg Medtech Innovations (GMI) is developing an innovative surgical instrument that will revolutionize the closure of surgical incisions. Today, this process is done manually with a needle and thread, which takes 20–45 minutes and involves the risk of variation in suture quality and puncture wounds. GMI´s solution reduces closure time by up to 50%, standardizes suture placement and minimizes the risk of complications. The project aims to prepare for commercialization.
Expected effects and result
Technical validation of the instrument through successful tests on human cadavers.
Regulatory strategy and CE classification clarified.
Commercial partnership established with global medtech player.
Funding for more efficient and safer surgery globally, with improved gender equality and ergonomics in operating rooms.
Planned approach and implementation
The project is being carried out in four stages: first a regulatory analysis to determine the right regulatory framework, then technical tests on human cadavers at Cambridge University to verify function and safety. The results form the basis for adjustments to the prototype. Finally, collaboration with a global medtech partner is initiated for commercialization and preparation for clinical trials.
