The sustainable economy of the future - circular and bio-based

The path taken for world consumption and production is unsustainable. We need to change and it is urgent. New innovations and new ways of thinking will be absolutely crucial to change direction.

This web page has been machine translated. If there are any uncertainties, please refer to the Swedish text.

This is circular economy

A circular economy is based on cycles, instead of the linear "create, use, discard". It is about recycling, reuse and sharing to make the best use of the resources we have. It is also about the materials and energy that have already been used - to take advantage of already made investments and topics high in the value chain.

This is bio-based economics

A bio-based economy is based on biological materials, instead of fossil-based materials. A bioeconomy means a society based on renewable biological resources. For the vision to become a reality, it is necessary for different industries and sectors to work together. We need new knowledge from research and development as well as new forms of collaboration where knowledge is translated into innovation. It is above all about new materials and optimal consumption - the pursuit of a fossil-free society.

Our objective: find the best projects within CBE

We need to strengthen Swedish innovation in the circular and bio-based economy, CBE, such as recycling, sharing and bio-based materials. In addition, extensive policy work is required to change a strongly entrenched consumption model. We are looking for both small start-ups and innovators who together want to change an entire industry from within. If you have a project idea that contributes to this, you can get funding from Vinnova.

Vinnova finances several initiatives where research institutes, companies, municipalities and other organizations together develop sustainable business models and new technical solutions. We are prepared to give more people the chance to jointly develop innovations that use the earth's resources in new ways. Can you contribute to that work?

Our average: SEK 500 million

Between 2015 and 2020, we invested approximately SEK 500 million in the area of circular and bio-based economies, up to SEK 1 billion including co-financing. In the call Circular and bio-based economy, we have funded both technical development and innovation projects that focus on circular flows and project that investigate obstacles and opportunities to drive the transition to a circular and bio-based economy.

Through its strategic partnership programmes identified five priority areas where new, innovative solutions can strengthen competitiveness, contribute to sustainable development and create more jobs. Circular and bio-based economics is one of these five areas, and Vinnova is tasked with supporting the government in its collaborative work.
