How is Sweden doing in Horisont Europa, the world's largest research and innovation programme ? We now present a summary of Sweden's participation in the EU's ninth framework program for research and innovation. The 2024 yearbook highlights Sweden's achievements from the program's start in 2021 up to and including 2024 and compares with previous results.

Sweden remains strong even as competition increases

Since 2023, the EU has granted an additional €12.5 billion in funding, and of these, Swedish organisations have received €400 million. This corresponds to 3.3 percent of all funds granted during the programme period. Despite a small decrease from 2023 by one tenth of a percent, Sweden has climbed from tenth to eighth place in the overall ranking of European beneficiary. However, the differences between the countries in seventh to eleventh place are very small. Sweden's ranking also differs between the different pillars, or parts, of Horisont Europa.

- In 2024, both Canada and the UK have been associated with the Horisont Europa program, which means that they can participate in the program on the same term as the member states. When these strong research nations are fully involved and share the pie, the share of other countries will of course decrease, notes Johan Lindberg, project manager for the yearbook and national contact person for cluster 4, which deals with digital issues, industry and space.

- The national goal for Sweden is to receive 3.7 percent of the contributions and we should still be able to achieve that in the future, continues Johan Lindberg. Through more of the Swedish parade branch collaboration between different types of actors, and by fully utilizing the support and expertise that is available when it comes to applying for funds from Horisont Europa, I think we can hope for better figures next year.

Sweden's results

  • Share of total funds granted: 3.3 percent
  • Total funding received 2021-2024: 1,421.7 million euros

Share of funds granted per type of organization in Sweden

  • Academy: 59.2 percent
  • Business: 22.3 percent
  • Research institutes: 9.5 percent

In terms of the type of organizations that received funding, the changes compared to the previous report are very small, but there is a noticeable increase in research institute funding, which increases by 1.4 percent. This increase is almost entirely offset by decreases in academia and business. The public sector and other types of organizations remain at about the same level as before.
