During the year, Vinnova established new ways of working for system innovation in areas that reflect important societal challenges and the innovation capabilities required for the transition to a sustainable society. An important ambition has been to more systematically involve different actors and a breadth of competencies in our work.

It is not least important to collaborate across traditional industry and sector boundaries and to create opportunities to test and demonstrate new solutions for system conversion in real life. That is why we invest in so-called system demonstrators, which are a way to test a combination of innovative solutions in a real environment and with regard to the context in which it will operate. One such example is the Reel project, which Vinnova participates in and finances through the Vehicle Strategic research program and innovation, where 40 battery-electric trucks will be used for regional freight transport services and which brings together a number of actors from transport buyers and hauliers to electricity network companies and suppliers of trucks.

This year has also been marked by much of the research and innovation bill that the government presented in December 2019 and which the Riksdag decided on this spring. It has given Vinnova a strengthened mandate and assignment to develop important investments such as the strategic innovation programs and investments in life science and digitalisation.
