Purpose and goal

The goal was to develop an application that, based on modern technology and leading research, contributes to increased participation for persons with aphasia by supporting in-depth communication. We used the modern computer game engine Unity to develop the application Dialogica. In accordance with the proposal, we built the prototype based on feedback from the target group and on well-founded dialogic methodology. The app incorporates argumentation theory and research in education and special needs education about participation, dialogical teaching, and metacognition.

Expected results and effects

The project has resulted in the app Dialogica, which is scientifically grounded and tested with the target group in different environments, both formal and informal. The direct representations of modern gaming technology, e.g. avatars and animations, have contributed to involvement and joy. Other functions, e.g. the "conversation tree" which visualizes conversational structures, supports memory, metacognition and participants´ influence on the content of the conversation. We also plan for adapting the app to other contexts, e.g. socioeconomically disadvantaged schools.

Planned approach and implementation

The project was intended to be carried out interdisciplinary and in close collaboration with the target group. During the project, we have merged competencies from technical, human and behavioral sciences where close collaboration has been crucial for achievement of the desired results. Early in the project period, close collaboration between researchers and the target group was also initiated, i.e. people with acquired brain injury and aphasia as well as relevant staff. Workshops and dialogues were held and resumed when the restrictions related to the pandemic were lifted.
