Venture future prototypes in sustainable mobility

Important results from the project

Food and meals are often overlooked in care, despite being crucial for health and well-being. We wanted to highlight that aging concerns us all. The prototype made decision-makers aware of the challenges in elderly meal situations, sparking new thoughts and reflections for action. The project provided insights into the value of foresight and speculative design as complementary methods in innovation work.

Expected long term effects

The project has given decision-makers more incentives to take necessary steps toward systemic change in elderly meals and food culture and to invest in preventive measures that improve meal situations for the elderly. The key perspective is that food and meals must be a central part of healthcare and elderly care. The prototype highlights that maintaining autonomy and human dignity are essential aspects of the meal experience in a future where WE are old.

Approach and implementation

We created a prototype through a dynamic process of sharing knowledge and experiences. Using signals and the future scenario as stimuli (Figures 2 and 3), we developed a pop-up exhibition, designed as a four-course dinner. Participants are taken on a journey where they reflect on their relationship with their future older self and speculate on improvements to older people´s meal situations. Analysis and reporting were done jointly, and an academic publication will be published by RISE.
