Purpose and goal
The purpose and goal of the project is to test Gapwaves MLW-technology with an optimized 4D radar array that addresses critical aspects and challenges defined by Waymo to gain more knowledge and understanding of the trade-offs and limitations of next-generation radar. The next-generation Waymo radar is a significant step forward in reducing costs, increased performance and expanding their autonomous fleet to provide more people with safe and reliable transportation.
Expected effects and result
Critical aspects of technical requirements for next-generation radars will be evaluated, such as performance but also manufacturability. The results will provide an understanding of the trade-offs that need to be made for a future design.
Planned approach and implementation
Step 1 - Concept antenna design The first step of the project is to develop a concept antenna based on input from Waymo Radar team. Step 2 - Manufacturing Manufacturing of the antenna parts will be done by the typical automotive suppliers. Step 3 – Assembly Antenna assembly at Gapwaves. Step 4 – Verification Verification of the concept antenna at Gapwaves using bench VNA and Anechoic chamber where stand-alone antenna performance with be analyzed.
