Project duration May 2016 - July 2017
Status Completed
Venture Strategic innovation program SIO Grafen

Purpose and goal

The purpose of the project was to increase the technical maturity of graphene on SiC for sensor applications and to establish a potential value chain from material manufacturing to end-use of the sensor. The understanding of the potential of graphene as a sensor element for detection of drug-classified substances has increased through the project and given reasons for continued work in the areas investigated. At least one permanent qualified job opportunity has been created through the project, where one of the actors chooses to continue to investigate detection methods.

Expected results and effects

The project has led to an understanding of different functionalizations of the graphene on SiC for sensor applications and also the interactions between molecules and the graphene itself. Detection of classified substances (amphetamine and cocaine) has been demonstrated partly with antibodies and partly with photoactivity of certain molecules. One conclusion of the result is that there is a lot of work left in the functionalization work with the graphene.

Planned approach and implementation

Graphensic and Acreo have been able to manufacture and process the graphene on silicon carbide with high yield. The design of the sensor elements has been based on the needs of Pamitus and NFC. Together with Pamitus, NFC has been able to verify the sensor setup with respect to the functionalization method and which molecules can be detected by any method. The chip has been verified for its sensitivity, design, and linearity within the measurement areas used.
