Visualizations of linked open data for Nobel Prizes

Reference number
Coordinator Nobel Media AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 100 000
Project duration April 2015 - December 2015
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

By utilizing our linked data we have tied together our own information about Nobel Laureates with information from Wikipedia and created two visualizations with the combined data. In the first visualization we created top lists based on the popularity of Nobel Prize Laureates on Nobelprize.org or Wikipedia. In the second visualization, we created a carousel of images from Wikimedia linked to Nobel Laureates.

Results and expected effects

The project´s results illustrate the added value that open linked data provide when data can be linked together in a high quality manner. In addition to visualizing interesting data concerning the Nobel Prizes, they highlight the importance of 5-star linked open data and the opportunities provided by linking different data sources - thus inspiring other developers to use these opportunities.

Approach and implementation

Themes of the visualizations were chosen based on interest from visitors to Nobelprize.org. Data was collected from both Nobel and Wikipedia where the SameAs link between Nobel and DBpedia enabled the connection. Visualisations have been published on the official website for the Nobel Prize, Nobelprize.org, and will be highlighted on the website and in social media. The source code has been published on Github.
