Tube straightening of the future

Reference number
Coordinator SWERIM AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 566 000
Project duration November 2022 - October 2025
Status Ongoing
Venture The strategic innovation programme for Metallic material
Call Metallic materials - Non-thematic call 2022

Purpose and goal

The aim of the project is to open up possibilities to predict and control dimension- and shape changes in connection with tube straightening. This would decrease the scrapping and rework of material and improve precision in deliveries to customers. A model will be developed to calculate the stresses and strains resulting from the straightening process and thereby predict the resulting dimension and shape changes. This will be combined with new technology for measuring and verifying the results in industrial applications.

Expected effects and result

The developed model will be applicable to several different straightening machine types and materials, and useful directly for industrial applications. A model for calculating dimension and shape changes during straightening will contribute to improved process control, less rework and reduced quality costs. Better and more exact methods for machine settings will also be a platform for a more efficient and quality assured process.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is carried out in close cooperation between four parties, including three tube manufacturers. Based on a review of existing models and approaches as well as an analysis of the real conditions in the straightening process at the companies, an approach to the modeling work is established. The modeling work is done in close dialogue with participating parties to verify that the desired accuracy and other requirements are achieved. Relevant material data for the model will be supplied by the companies, which will also evaluate the results of the models through practical trials.
