Transforming Food Packaging: The CRISP Graphene Initiative

Reference number
Coordinator Stiftelsen Chalmers Industriteknik
Funding from Vinnova SEK 300 000
Project duration April 2024 - July 2025
Status Ongoing
Venture Global cooperation 2024
Call Planning grant for international proposal 2024

Purpose and goal

It has been estimated that, by 2050, a 50% increase in global food supplies will be required due to the increase in global population growth. As demand for food rises, so does the demand for food packaging. The problem is that many food packages constitute of mixed materials which hinder recycling processes and contribute to the growing problem of plastic waste. Our project introduces a graphene-based nanocomposite material that can result in about 60% reduction in the carbon footprint and 30% reduction in plastic consumption.

Expected effects and result

Through the contribution from Vinnova, we will work on building a consortium and write a proposal to EIT Food Single Project Co-Funding Opportunity. The result of the planning project will be a complete and submitted project proposal. We expect that the proposal will be approved and that the main project can start later in the year. In the longer term, a successful result will lead to a reduced environmental impact from food packaging.

Planned approach and implementation

The planning project will contribute to putting together the best team of partners for the project consortium. A large part of the activities will be to create a Business model canvas and Launch plan, as required for the proposal. We will also carry out the full project planning and proposal writing, including a mandatory communication, dissemination and outreach plan.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
