Important results from the project
The results we see reflect a growing international trend where plant-based meals are gradually being introduced into healthcare – with successful examples from the US, UK and Germany. Several hospital contacts in Sweden have also expressed interest in moving forward, indicating a growing momentum. This is in line with the accumulated evidence that an increased intake of plant-based foods can improve patient health while contributing to reduced environmental and climate impact.
Expected long term effects
This may contribute to better health among patients in the long term, especially through a reduced risk of diet-related diseases. It may also reduce the climate impact of healthcare and increase equality in access to healthy food, especially for groups with poorer dietary habits. The results may also be relevant for future governance and policy, for example in public procurement or as a basis for long-term work on national dietary guidelines.
Approach and implementation
The project has conducted seminars, workshops and interviews with various parties in Sweden and abroad. Study visits have been made to Sodexo in New York to see and understand on site how a successful concept has been built based on their conditions. An important part has also been that Läkare För Framtiden has taken research-based evidence and made it understandable to increase knowledge in Sodexo´s organization about the importance of a plant-based diet and its benefits from several aspects.
