Important results from the project
The aim was to develop system that can help people with limited vision/hearing to travel safe in traffic despite the fact that several vehicles (electric vehicles) become quieter. The goal was to find out which methods, algorithms, components, design and interaction design can fulfill the desired function. Furthermore, the advantages/disadvantages of different solutions are investigated. Through technical investigations and aesthetic laboratory work, it was possible to develop solution proposals suitable for the detection, identification and location of a vehicle.
Expected long term effects
The aim of aesthetic labs/tests with vibrotactile signals was to gain an understanding of the vibrations that can be delivered via different interfaces to different parts of the body. The group´s attitude to vibrations was changed after the tests and their understanding of vibrations was increased. This experience is important when the system is to be used by a special group with special needs. The group that tested different techniques could state that, for example, ultrasound does not work outdoors when it is windy and does not work at home when there are many walls and obstacles.
Approach and implementation
The work was performed by two different groups, designers who focused on design and technicians who focused on technology and sensors. While the groups performed the work, everyone in the project group had contact with each other, which meant that everyone gained insight into what the other group was doing. In parallel with the technical and aesthetic work, contacts were established with possible project partners. Due to Corona and diseases, a workshop was carried out later than planned and thus the project was delayed.
