Purpose and goal

The Athena Award for excellent performance in clinical research was established in 2008. The aim is to show the importance of clinical research to develop health care and to stimulate growth in the health care industry. This years laureate was a group of reserachers that have developed a new evidence based internet based method for treatment of social phobia and hypochondria. The project engage reserachers and developers at Karolinska institutet, Gustavsbergs vårdcentral, Stockholms universitet, Psykiatri sydväst and an IT-company, Chorus.

Expected results and effects

The Athena award laureate was presented on November 28th at a prize ceremony in Stockholm with 100 invited guests from healthcare, academic institutions and life science companies. Laureates Erik Hedman and Kersti Ejeby was interviewed in a major story in Dagens Medicin, and the press release was published on the partner organizations´ websites as well on the website of Karolinska institutet. The prize was awarded by Helene Hellmark Knutsson, Minister of higher education and research.

Planned approach and implementation

The nomination procedure for the Athena Award was made in two steps, where it was free to propose candidates in the first stage and the jury then selected ten candidates who were asked to make a complete nomination. This year we had more nominated reserach projects of high quality than previous years.
