Important results from the project

Due to a great need for digitization of airports and airspace to create a sustainable future transport capability, the Testbed Autonomous Airport project has been carried out through a digital infrastructure for the possibility of autonomous flight of UAVs. The project demonstrates a basis for an open test bed for research, development and test and demo. The testbed integrates with the conventional air traffic control system and uses the latest technology for the identification and positioning of UAVs and adheres to updates in the U-space Drone Strategy 2.0.

Expected long term effects

Establishment of a basic digital infrastructure and implementation of a demonstration of unmanned aerial transport is carried out through a first variant of autonomous flight test bed with combined physical entities together with a large amount of simulated entities. The project has also created infrastructure conditions for the integration of ATM and U-space by starting to create a new architecture for the ATM system and the physical entities have used the latest 4G / 5G technology for identification and positioning.

Approach and implementation

Saab, Ericsson, RISE, Linköping University and the Civil Aviation Authority participated in the project. Each party participated with their knowledge, experience as well as models, tools and systems. In order to carry out the project, interfaces were developed between the different systems so that together they formed a useful system for the first iteration. The parties worked both separately in their respective systems and environments as well as together in WS, tests and demo flights.
