Important results from the project

The main goal of this project was to investigate recycling potential of iron phosphate batteries (LFP) in Sweden and Europe. It aimed to map the LFP market and recycling technologies, but only a few announcements were found in Europe when compared to Asia. Preliminary experiments were carried out on a lab scale to assess the recycling performance of LFP cells, and the main results demonstrated the effects of blending LFP cells with other battery chemistries, while hydrometallurgical tests with only LFP were also performed and showed potential to recover its main components.

Expected long term effects

The project provided key information for the recycling LFP batteries, including mapping the LFP market in Europe, which is still limited when compared to Asia. Preliminary recycling tests were performed on a lab scale, which allowed to identify the challenges for LFP recycling along with other existing and common battery chemistries. The project increased the knowledge about the recycling of these cells, contributing to the recovery of critical metals from secondary resources, decreasing the need for mining. The project outcomes are to be further optimized in a future stage.

Approach and implementation

The project was developed in close collaboration between Revolt and RISE, having Revolt coordinated the activities. The mapping of use of the LFP technology and potential recycling alternatives was carried out by RISE with Revolt´s support. Preliminary hydrometallurgical tests were performed by Revolt, while the characterization of solid samples and also residues from the hydrometallurgical tests were conducted by RISE, supporting the validation of the main project findings. Revolt and RISE worked together to create the project presentation for the Program´s Day.
