Important results from the project

The goals of engaging and bringing together different parts of civil society, the municipality, property owners, academia and private initiatives have been met. Our project has highlighted challenges and opportunities that will be important for the continued work on Örviken´s development but also for places with similar conditions. It has shown a possible way forward for the town and can serve as a platform for continued development if it is taken care of by the municipality.

Expected long term effects

The project has highlighted challenges that are important to include in the planning process in order to create a good foundation for the sustainable development of a place with great cultural environmental values. The project has contributed with alternative methods and processes for the remediation of contaminated land, something that is a challenge in large parts of Skellefteå municipality but also in other parts of the country.

Approach and implementation

Building trust and finding key people has proven to be crucial in anchoring the project locally and in opening up dialogue between different parts of society. Together with analysis of the site, its historical layers and the cultural environment, an understanding of the site´s conditions was developed. The openness and willingness to discuss and collaborate both within the municipality and in the locality has been overwhelming and ideas have raised expectations in society.
