Important results from the project
Project partners were 2D fab AB (2D fab) and Woxna Graphite (Woxna) and the aim was to investigate if Swedish graphite could compatibly be used to produce graphene. The primary goal was to produce graphene from Swedish graphite. The secondary goal as to find application suitable for Swedish graphene and initiate value chains capable to industrial use of graphene. 2Ds goal was also to get a ´proof-of-concept´ for its process and to better understand the role of the raw material.
Expected long term effects
The primary goal was reached in the sense that graphene was produced frpm graphite originating form the Woxna mine. The yield was however low and did not live up to expectations. 2Ds got a ´proof-of-concept´ for its process and a better understandiong of the roll of the raw material. The project initiated several development project, in which 2D fab now is participating, together with customers. Woxna is now focusing its development on battery graphite. This graphite will later be tested as a potential raw material for graphene.
Approach and implementation
The project consisted of several parts: Woxna produced sample with different size distributions in their processes, and the samples were tested in graphene production. In addition, battery grade graphite was produced and will later be tested as raw material for graphene. A benchmark, including various types of graphite, was performed. At a number of occasions Woxna and 2D fab met potential customers and partners in order to create networks able to produce future graphene products. IP and market analysis, cost calculations of products and processes were also performed.
