Important results from the project
Yes. The project has met its objectives and delivered results that exceed initial expectations regarding scientific details of microstructural characterization, heat treatments and weldability of the new superalloys G27 and VDM780.
Expected long term effects
The results enable the potential implementation of next-generation superalloys VDM 780 and G27 in the fabrication of future aeroengines further development towards higher TRL-level. By establishing their heat treatment and weldability performance, it guides the industry to evaluate their suitability in the modern aeroengine with higher service temperature.
Approach and implementation
The project was carried out as a collaboration between academia and industry (GKN Aerospace, VDM Metals, and Carpenter Technology). The work focused on evaluating the next-generation superalloys, VDM 780 and G27, through heat treatment studies, weldability testing via Varestraint and hot ductility tests, and advanced microstructure analysis using SEM, TEM, EBSD, and NanoSIMS.
