Important results from the project

Through the project, the company has carefully investigated the needs of different types of food actors and developed production processes for a sustainable development of sea and tank-grown macroalgae for food production. The company has improved production processes in both the lab environment and the marine environment, which has resulted in a more competitive product. In addition, the company has developed forms of processing that better suit food actors, in particular restaurants and food producers, which in turn will significantly improve the end customer experience.

Expected long term effects

The company has, based on needs identified in the food industry, created more efficient production processes in the early stages of the lab, at sea at the farms, and in processing stages. The raw material is now available in better forms for food producers in large quantities and in consumer-friendly forms sold through the newly launched e-commerce company website. The results from this project has also provided the company with the necessary insights for future scaling and knowledge about the coming investments to make seaweed even more accessible to a wider audience.

Approach and implementation

The project´s structure and implementation has overall been executed very well. COVID-19 has affected to the extent that more meetings and tests have been held digitally - but has not affected the outcomes to any great extent. The company has gained more contacts and partners in the restaurant and food industry, both for dried and frozen seaweed. We have also started our own e-commerce, with in-house developed products, to lower the barriers to using seaweed in food and sales has already started well. Now the work continues to create and launch more products with Swedish seaweed inside.
