Purpose and goal
The project´s objective is to identify the policies and regulations affecting the conditions
for the production of metallurgical biochar, to map the existing objective- and conflicts of interest, and to evaluate what kind of policy changes would enable faster development of the biochar industry. This will be summarized in a vision for a sustainable supply of metallurgical biochar to support Sweden´s metal industry in transitioning to fossil-free steel production.
Expected effects and result
By analyzing rules and instruments, identifying conflicts of interest and proposing policy changes, the project aims to create a robust market for biochar. Expected results include increased knowledge of policies, recommendations for sustainable production and a vision for the biochar market. This supports Sweden´s transition to fossil-free production methods and promotes collaboration between different industries to reduce climate impact.
Planned approach and implementation
The project will identify and analyze current policies and conflicts of interest, and propose changes.
Swerim AB coordinates the project, which includes interviews with stakeholders, reference groups and workshops to gather insights from various actors. The results are compiled in a final report and a vision document that describes how the Swedish biochar market can meet domestic needs for energy and raw materials and achieve negative CO2 emissions.
