Purpose and goal
The project aims to investigate how circular economy (CE) goals can be structured to guide both environmental policy and industry’s sustainability efforts. The automotive industry is chosen as a case study due to its significant resource use, which is expected to grow. Amongst others, the project will examine how existing and proposed regulations for the automotive industry (e.g. the EU Battery Regulation and the anticipated change in producer responsibility) could incorporate such CE goals.
Expected effects and result
The automotive industry’s significant resource use and upcoming requirements towards a CE, implies that the project’s focus on CE goals and their potential impact on the industry has great potential to influence resource management and overall resource consumption. The project results could benefit Swedish industry by providing a better understanding of future potential requirements and identifying legal demands that could effectively reduce resource use and offer competitive advantages.
Planned approach and implementation
The project includes three work packages (WP) carried out by five partners: RISE, IIIEE, Cirkelar, Ragn-Sells, and Volvo. WP1 is a literature review aimed at analyzing possible goals for a CE. WP2 uses interviews and a workshop to analyze industry needs related to CE goal development. WP3 is a case study on policy instruments for the automotive industry. Literature and a workshop are used to examine existing and upcoming regulations, also in the context of future CE goals.
