Important results from the project

The overall project aim was to, through collaboration between technological and epidemiological expertise, find innovative solutions to develop veterinary syndromic surveillance, with the ultimate aim to improve our capacity for early detection of diseases with impact on animal- and public health. The project has delivered, in line with its objectives, a solid knowledge base, an engaged community of experts and a sound insight into the resources needed for further development of the ontology.

Expected long term effects

The project´s developments; a solid knowledge base, and an engaged community of experts, has provided us with good insight into the resources needed for further development of the ontology. Further development is necessary to reach the long-term effects on surveillance capacity and societal health, but the project has already lead to a strengthened national and international network as well as the establishment of Sweden´s leading role in the development of veterinary syndromic surveillance.

Approach and implementation

The project has been structured into four work packages, and implemented, largely, according to plan. An inventory of already existing ontologies, and their potential reuse, was added to WP1. WP4 is still underway with the aim to submit an application for the next upcoming FRÖN call. Throughout, collaborations within the project team and steering group have been efficient and in good spirit. The project has been well communicated and has received a lot of positive attention.
