Important results from the project
Three Mobile Carbon Capture (MCC) systems for diesel trucks were simulated, employing Temperature Vacuum Swing Adsorption with zeolites or MOFs plus desorption, liquefaction and storage of CO2 onboard the truck. The best variant offered a gross (net) reduction of 64 (19) % CO2 at a power demand of 43 kW-el, for a capture cost of 1270 €/tonne-CO2. Another MCC-system with offboard desorption was proposed instead, offering 55 (48) % less CO2 at 6 kW-el for 260 €/tonne-CO2.
Expected long term effects
If MCC should make its way into EU´s CO2 regulation for trucks, for the beginning the developers will probably abstain from onboard regeneration of solid adsorbents or liquid solvents. Onboard capture with offboard regeneration plus processing of the extracted CO2 seems to be more economic.
Approach and implementation
The feasibility study went as planned and the timeplan for 7 months was kept.
