Important results from the project
CloneOpt AB has realised that our potential customers have a common need, which we could address by using the technology to build a series of proto-types (or more specifically genetic modules that can be used in clones). Once engineered, these modules could be sold off-the-shelf using a licence agreement. Our goals here were to (1) Develop and test proto-type genetic modules that we have developed with commercial partners. (2) Explore patentability by carrying out a novelty search.
Expected long term effects
We have develop the 6 prototype genetic modules for producing proteins outside of the bacterial cell, as well as a second range of modules that can be used for producing proteins inside the cell. We have taken concerted steps towards testing these modules with five commercial partners. Finally we have had discussions with a patent attorney.
Approach and implementation
Using the funding we hired a postdoc for a three-month period. He has helped to develop the 6 prototype genetic modules for producing proteins outside of the bacterial cell, as well as a second range of modules that can be used for producing proteins inside the cell. We have discussed these modules with 5 companies, and in some cases handed over the genetic modules for in-house testing. Finally we have had discussions with a patent attorney. These discussions indicated that it would be feasible to patent the genetic modules.
