Purpose and goal

Sharing Cities Sweden aimed to put Sweden on the map as a country that actively and critically works with the sharing economy in cities. It was a key part of Viable Cities - a strategic innovation program for smart and sustainable cities. Sharing Cities Sweden established world-leading test-beds for the sharing economy in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö and Umeå as well as completed six strategic projects. Sharing Cities Sweden worked collaboratively with Viable Cities to ensure the lessons and findings from the test-beds, strategic projects and program flowed into Viable Cities.

Expected results and effects

Through the test-beds in Sharing Cities Sweden, sharing services and digital solutions were developed, tested and evaluated. The test-beds provided an “innovation boost” to the cities of Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö and Umeå. Sharing Cities Sweden established a national node to coordinate activities and facilitate vibrant collaboration across and between organisations, cities and communities. The national node developed an online course, organised a global summit, launched and completed six strategic projects, and coordinated the publication of over 100 outputs.

Planned approach and implementation

Sharing Cities Sweden significantly contributed to creating new projects and new opportunities that live on beyond the life of the program. Key examples of lasting impacts include: the development and expansion of Smarta Kartan in cities in Sweden; the hosting of a collection of online events; the engagement with the developments in Sege Park in Malmö, Masthuggskajen in Gothenbrug, ElectriCity in Stockholm, and Campusparken in Umeå; and the creation of a Sharing Cities Massive Open Online Course that is a mechanism to share the key findings and outputs from Sharing Cities Sweden.
