Important results from the project
After adapting the initial project plan, all revised goals were achieved. We developed the world’s first fully scalable, automation-ready magnetic separation SKID for biopharmaceutical manufacturing. The system uniquely integrates cell clarification and target capture in a single unit operation, representing a major innovation with potential to streamline processes, improve efficiency, and reduce complexity in downstream bioprocessing.
Expected long term effects
The project is expected to significantly impact biopharmaceutical manufacturing. Computational studies show the SKID can cut cost of goods by ~40% and capital investment by up to 17%, while boosting output by up to 38%. By integrating magnetic separation, the technology improves efficiency, reduces resource use, and supports more sustainable, scalable, and cost-effective bioprocessing in the long term.
Approach and implementation
The project began with evaluating existing magnetic separation solutions, which lacked the required capacity and scalability. The plan was adapted to develop a custom, fully scalable and automation-ready SKID. This novel system integrates cell clarification and target capture in one unit, underwent extensive validation, and was officially launched at BPI 2025.
