Important results from the project

** Denna text är maskinöversatt ** The aim was to develop a platform that uses drones equipped with an LoRa-DTN-communication unit. This enables users to send messages and share position with collaborating reindeer herders in areas that lack mobile coverage. The function was developed and integrated in the already existing NOMATRACK platform used by reindeer herders for reindeer tracking.

Expected long term effects

** Denna text är maskinöversatt ** The project developed a new function that makes it possible for reindeer herders to communicate in areas that do not have mobile coverage. This increases the safety of reindeer herders and streamlines work and reduces the environmental impact through optimized logistics and transportation. By using a single drone equipped with LoRa-DTN-communication unit, the project was able to cover a more than 30 km wide area during tests and / or expand the coverage of the already existing network.

Approach and implementation

In this project, we upgraded the existing Nomatrack platform with a messaging function. The platform was originally developed for reindeer tracking. From a software perspective, a new function has been added to the existing mobile app. Server database was customized and prepared for LoRa-DTN-protocol updated for base stations and pocket nodes. On the hardware side, a new LoRa-DTN-pocket node was designed as well as a lightweight LoRa-DTN communication drone unit that is mounted hanging under the drone.
