Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The research and innovation agenda Safe food in Sweden! describes how to achieve the vision of Swedish food to have the highest food safety level in Europe. Efforts in important research and innovation areas related to microbial food safety are identified. Long term effects are increased domestic production of safe raw materials and food, increased export of food and the increased availability of competitive services and systems. In addition, reduced social costs and a high level of public confidence are expected.

Results and expected effects

The big challenge is to design and organize the food chain so that the food produced is safe. The agenda identifies five key areas where research and innovation will lead to innovative and sustainable solutions on Swedish and global challenges in food safety. The strategy to achieve the vision ´Swedish food is the safest in Europe´ contains three parts; communicate food safety challenges and solutions, build cross-border collaboration and perform research that creates innovations. Goals are identified to be met by 2030.

Approach and implementation

The development of the agenda involved experts from four agencies, two industry associations, 11 food companies, two universities and two research institutes. The Agenda was also sent out for comments to food business and consumer organizations. Three activity-based workshops have been conducted to describe the current situation in terms of Swedish strengths and challenges, and to analyze and describe innovations necessary for improved food safety.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
