Important results from the project

The project goals were achieved through a working demonstrator with remote control of a forestry machine via a local 5G network. Tests showed that the technology works, but also that installation, weather impact, and signal interference are challenges. The project provided key insights into the need for robust solutions and highlighted broader applications beyond forestry. Results from the drone test were shared via press release and film.

Expected long term effects

The project is expected to contribute to long-term digitalization of the forest industry through increased automation, improved work environment, and reduced emissions from less transport. The technology enables remote operation even in remote areas and can be applied to agriculture, emergency services, and energy. It strengthens Swedish expertise in advanced 5G communication, edge computing, and robust mobile connectivity in rural environments.

Approach and implementation

The project was led by Mid Sweden University in collaboration with Telia, Ericsson, Skogforsk, Biometria, SCA and Volvo CE. The work was divided into eight packages, from needs analysis to technology development, testing and utilization. A demonstrator was developed where a forwarder was remotely controlled via a drone-based 5G network. Field tests and evaluations were carried out to reflect real conditions.
