Purpose and goal
The ability to coordinate airborne platforms is crucial to efficiently and successfully carry out tasks as a central part of the focus area. Recently, it has become apparent that existing RF COM coordination systems have fundamental vulnerabilities for detection and interference where modern mitigation techniques are inadequate. The project intends to verify the remaining solution “Directed COM” via an MFS antenna Hw. This requires further maturation of the waveform and routing protocol.
Expected effects and result
The project aims to demonstrate in a lab environment how a directed COM function works, its resistance to interference and the difficulty for an opponent to detect it. One of the main recipients of the results will be KFS. Other potential beneficiaries are EU-wide multi-purpose ISR drones facilitated by ground-based, manned or unmanned platforms, in which case a network-based set of unmanned air platforms can restore QoS and achieve safe operations.
Planned approach and implementation
The work covers everything from project management/definition to targeted topology control/waveform development on the PHY layer including study to identify low-cost COTS components from the telecommunications market for ground-based and UAV MILCOM use. Overall feasibility includes integration and design considerations for the PHY layer, as well as a realistic directed antenna model for custom simulation scenarios to CONOPS to ensure realistic and relevant testing with Hw in the loop.
