Important results from the project
The aim of the FFI-project DREAMS was to investigate the potential of camera-based rear-view mirror systems on trucks to improve traffic safety. By using Stoneridge’s camera-based rear-view mirror prototype mounted on a Scania-truck as a case study at the test-track AstaZero and on public roads, it generated knowledge on how such systems operate, if truck drivers find them useful and appealing, and to what extent they could improve traffic safety.
Expected long term effects
The results show that camera-based rear-view mirror systems can reduce blind spots around trucks and add views that are difficult for drivers to obtain otherwise. This makes trucks safer at the same time as it reduces air drag and improves fuel economy. The project has increased technical maturity of Stoneridge’s camera-based rear-view mirror prototype and brought it a step closer to the market introduction that is scheduled for 2018. It has also led to a general growth in the innovation capacity in Sweden, and empowered strategic R&D activities and manufacturing in Sweden.
Approach and implementation
The project was divided into four work packages: 1. Project management 2. Prototype development 3. Extended functionality of the prototype 4. Evaluation of the prototype The focus was on improving the prototype and evaluating it in realistic settings with truck drivers. The evaluations involved both experiments and real-world use of the prototype, and were conducted in various traffic environments and under various light and weather conditions. This gave input to further development of the prototype, both in the short- and long-term.
