Important results from the project
The purpose of the project was to analyze implementation challenges of a radar-based joint communication and sensing from both hardware and software points of view. Additionally we aimed to investigate whether the Radchat solution is practical for the automotive industry through discussions with our industrial partners. Radchat as the responsible partner has performed simulation, numerical analysis, and demonstration of feasible scenarios and the outcomes were presented to the partners to collect their viewpoint and feedback on the progress and potential future directions.
Expected long term effects
It was concluded that the introduction of radar systems with two-way communication capability is a technical challenge and difficult to reach the market as it requires significant changes in legislation and radar design. This led us to a second related concept, which is compatible with widely existing radars and enables them to receive communication data from backscatter tags. Continued research and verification of this approach that utilizes configurable intelligent surfaces for common sensing and communication solutions is ongoing.
Approach and implementation
The project questions have been discussed through regular workshops with Veoneer and Qamcom. Radchat as the responsible partner has performed simulation, numerical analysis, and demonstration of feasible scenarios and the outcomes were presented to the partners to collect their viewpoint and feedback on the progress and potential future directions. Based on the collaborative analysis and discussions the roadmap has been modified and updated. From a business model and value proposition standpoint these alterations have proven necessary for the survival of Radchat as a business.
