Quantum cascade lasers for telecommunication wavelengths

Reference number
Coordinator CHALMERS TEKNISKA HÖGSKOLA AKTIEBOLAG - Institutionen för mikroteknologi och nanovetenskap
Funding from Vinnova SEK 12 465 000
Project duration January 2008 - August 2011
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

Fabricate quantum cascade lasers with short wavelengths.

Expected results and effects

Quantum cascade lasers at 1.55 µm would be superior to existing telecommunication lasers. Three effects will be studied: single and double barrier behaviour, the quantum cascade principle and the full laser structure.

Planned approach and implementation

The plan is to fabricate the laser in two main steps. First a long wavelength device and then focus on shorter wavelengths. The following issues will be specifically studied: substrate and epitaxial growth, theory and modelling and finally processing and device evaluation.
