Important results from the project
The QABB project researched quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) processes for adhesive joints in battery packs. The project used literature reviews and experimental trials to evaluate QA/QC methods like Ultrasonic Testing (UT) , Electromechanical Impedance Spectroscopy (EMIS) and thermography. Results showed potential for UT and EMIS, but less for thermography on aluminium surfaces. The project recommends further research into data analysis, automation, and other applications.
Expected long term effects
The implementation of reliable and effective quality assurance methods in adhesive bonding processes promises significant long-term effects. They will enable predictive quality control of adhesive bonds, minimizing the need for after-market repairs and improving product reliability. Also, automatic and inline quality assurance methods will facilitate real-time monitoring of adhesive bonds, eliminating the need for offline testing in production as well as repairs during the use phase.
Approach and implementation
A literature review and discussions with industry experts were conducted to identify the state of the art in quality assurance and quality control of adhesive bond joints in battery packs. It was followed by a series of trials to evaluate the performance of different QA methods. The results of the trials were used to develop a set of recommendations for quality assurance methods and proposals for further research. The project was conducted in collaboration with industry partners.
