Packet Optical Transport Research and Development Lab for the Future Network

Reference number
Coordinator Transmode Systems AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 10 000 000
Project duration July 2017 - April 2020
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The project has established a working model for collaboration for new generation optical access technologies for higher bit rates, and improved automation of DWDM access networks for mobile, enterprise and residential usage. Stake holders include key parties of the Swedish optical network cluster; communications service provider Telia Company, system vendor Infinera, component vendor Finisar, now II-IV, and research institute RISE. The results help strengthening the Swedish cluster and improve digitalization of Swedish enterprises.

Expected results and effects

The project has provided a number of prototypes, studies and technical reports in the area of software defined optical wavelength division multiplexed networks and related topics. Results have been commercialized by the companies taking part of the project, resulting in increased demand for the products with a revenue increase above industry average during the project period.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has been managed by Infinera (Transmode Sweden AB). Governance has been provided by a steering committee consisting of the GM/head of the Swedish affiliates of Finisar (II-VI) and Infinera (Transmode Systems AB), representative from the Telia Company CTO group function, and head of optical research unit at RISE. The steering committee has continuously decided on content of project work items and reviewed the results. Contributors to the work items have been all parties. The research effort has turned into published papers, and product commercialization.
