Important results from the project
An automated quality inspection system was fully realized within the project. A new drill geometry was also developed, although grinding of PCD drills proved harder than expected which meant that this part of the project did only in part live up to the envisioned economic and ecologic benefits.
Expected long term effects
An experimental setup and quality inspection system for examining the hole quality of drilled CFRP holes has been developed and tested with good results. Additionally, a new PCD drill geometry has been developed for drills intended for drilling in CFRP. Through using this new knowledge an operational window for the drilling of CFRP could better be established resulting in both better hole quality and decreased tool wear, thus contributing to a more sustainable drilling process.
Approach and implementation
Some work packages were done separately by Swedish and German partners. However, several work packages hade to be performed in unison through collaboration within the project. Academic partners have had biweekly 30-minute meetings and Swedish partners have had a one-hour meeting every month. The project was granted an extension due to problems linked to covid restrictions and the fact that the responsible researcher at Lund University was on parental leave for part of the project period.
