Non-destructive testing using microwaves to assess plastic corrosion

Reference number
Coordinator RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB - RISE Korrosion
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 520 000
Project duration November 2024 - April 2026
Status Ongoing
Venture Advanced digitalization - Enabling technologies
Call Test and demo of advanced digitization in a real environment

Purpose and goal

The project will develop and deploy devices to measure the thickness of GAP with microwaves used at four different sites, a pulp mill, two chlorine mills and a chemical plant. The microwave devices are constructed with a new and cheap type of chip, allowing for a wide dissemination of the future product. This methodology has proven in previous projects to be very promising for the purpose. Software and hardware will be developed in collaboration between RISE and Percy Roc.

Expected effects and result

The response of the measuring instrument will be correlated to the physical condition of the material evaluated in the lab. This knowledge will be the basis for safe and secure use of the technology. In addition to knowledge of the effects of different materials on microwave propagation, knowledge of how different environments (chemical solution, liquid and gas) affect the signals will also be obtained. Lessons will also be learned on how to make the product practical for use in industry.

Planned approach and implementation

Percy Roc will contribute with the majority of resources focused on software and hardware development (WP2) and business development (WP5). RISE will contribute with project coordination working on software and hardware development (WP2) in close collaboration with Percy Roc and validate these measurements (WP3). The remaining industrial partners are end-users and will contribute about one man-month to the project, mainly focusing on on-site measurements and validation of these in the lab.
