NETZUUP - Net Zero Urban Upgrade Project

Purpose and goal

The purpose is to explore a model for energy retrofit in an existing building stock by adding manufactured units on top of existing buildings. The model aims to fund necessary energy retrofitting by adding rentable space, thereby increasing property value and creating incentives for renovations. The preliminary study examines the conditions in the Bay Area, CA, USA. The project´s objectives are to assess feasibility, identify suitable areas and building types, and develop a viable system model.

Expected effects and result

1) Proposal for a model and project plan for manufactured additions on top of existing buildings in the Bay Area. 2) Identifying and summarizing stakeholder requirements and potential for cooperation. 3) Detailed Plan for System Pilot Implementation Through this feasibility study, NETZUUP is expected to contribute to an improved living environment combining economic incentives with sustainability goals, fostering more resilient and energy-efficient urban development in California and beyond.

Planned approach and implementation

1) Initial Analysis of Existing Building Types and Identification of Suitable Areas: Conduct discussions with stakeholders to map local conditions and needs. 2) Examination of Relevant Guidelines, Policies, and Early-Stage Process Models: Analyze technical and financial conditions to assess feasibility. 3) Development of Pilot Plan and Final Report: Compile the findings from the preliminary study and develop a comprehensive project plan and system model.
