Reference number
Coordinator Trästad Sverige
Funding from Vinnova SEK 133 000
Project duration November 2024 - June 2025
Status Completed

Important results from the project

By analyzing regulations, policies, and market conditions in the U.S./California/Bay Area, we have been able to confirm the feasibility of industrially manufactured timber vertical extensions. City planning offices, among others, clarified obstacles and needs. We selected a site in central Oakland and designed a system pilot—project plan, partners and business model. Suitable typologies and energy efficiency upgrades, including seismic retrofits, have been identified; Project launch is ready.

Expected long term effects

The project has great potential to increase exports and make it easier for Swedish architects and others to deliver to the US by identifying obstacles and opportunities. We have introduced wooden superstructures as a new concept, also linked to renovation and energy efficiency. We will develop parametric tools for early stages to evaluate technical conditions but also for well-being. Med Oakland-piloten, we see clear spin-off opportunities in more urban projects.

Approach and implementation

The project was carried out through a series of meetings and gatherings with public-and private sector actors such as city planning departments and developers and also conferences, and study visits. We also identified Swedish and U.S. partners for a physical pilot. We held meetings with the intended pilot project team, both on site in California and online. We are now entering a new phase, preparing to start pilot. Also, research was done into California housing policy and framework.
