Purpose and goal
We will describe how to design, implement and manage a national mapping system and database for secondary flows of critical raw materials (CRMs). It should: 1. Support upcoming reporting requirements for Swedish companies and authorities based on EU legislation. 2. Serve as a knowledge resource for Swedish industry. 3. Ultimately contribute to reducing the climate and environmental footprint of the manufacturing, mining, and metal industries by enabling greater utilization of secondary CRMs.
Expected effects and result
Increased awareness among key actors in Sweden will help companies and authorities prepare for CRM reporting requirements. This will, for example, facilitate—and provide opportunities to influence—the Swedish implementation of EU legislation and will likely be beneficial for the competitiveness of Swedish companies. The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency will be the main project recipient, providing excellent conditions for managing and further developing the project results.
Planned approach and implementation
Initially, an environmental and stakeholder analysis will be conducted to define and prioritize EU legislation, CRMs, and key stakeholders. Subsequently, selected technical and administrative aspects of the proposed system will be tested. The project will be carried out by IVL and a user group of Swedish industrial companies, with a strong focus on iteration and rapid evaluation. A reference group of government agencies and companies will further support engagement and dissemination of results.
