Important results from the project

The project comprised four work packages and the activities carried out are summarized in a final report. The project was affected by the Corona pandemic, and some of the planned activities could not be carried out. Instead, the project devoted resources to conducting events via the web (webinar, discussions within the steering and reference groups, and interviews). Finally a proposal for continued work was prepared, which resulted in a two-year project to support mining municipalities in their work, which was approved for funding by SMI and the regions in December 2020.

Expected long term effects

Important factors for achieving the strong social acceptance of mining establishment in Pajala have been evaluated. These include that a good and open dialogue is maintained, and that recruitment of staff is focused on finding people who live - or come from - the area. These types of factors are certainly relevant to other areas / places. Especially those who, in the absence of major investments of the type mines represent, lack another significant opportunity to ensure good socio-economic development.

Approach and implementation

The project has consisted of four work packages. The project was affected by the Corona pandemic, so some of the activities that were initially planned could not be carried out. Instead, the project put resources into conducting events via the web (webinar, discussions within the steering and reference groups and interviews). Activities that strengthen gender equality, attraction factors and development in the community where a mine intends to establish have been identified and relevant activities have also been carried out within the project.
