Important results from the project
The SME-project was initiated within the frames of the Vinnova Competence center Batteries Sweden (BASE). The aim was to investigate the possibility of performing a heat treatment of Talgas anode material using microwaves. The time for treating the material could potentially be shortened to less than 10% of the original time, along with a reduction in energy requirements. The material is complex to process with microwaves, but Percyroc´s technology made it possible in the end.
Expected long term effects
Making the anode (which makes up half of the active materials in a lithium-ion battery) green, can dramatically reduce carbon emissions in the manufacturing of electric vehicles, energy storage systems and consumer electronics. Talga´s silicon-carbon composite is used as an energy-enhancing product in commercial graphite battery anodes. Using microwaves instead of conventional heating methods makes the material even greener and significantly reduces processing time.
Approach and implementation
Percyroc and Talga worked together to create a production process for the Talnode Si material using microwaves. This was done under the scope of Batteries Sweden. The material tested the boundaries of the microwave equipment but after development of hard and software the process could be realised and material produced.
