Important results from the project

** Denna text är maskinöversatt ** The goal was to verify CO2-neutral lime and dolomite as slag formers through material mapping and characterization and high temperature experiments where the lime and dolomite were mixed with other slag formers and melted with steel to form a slag similar to ladle furnace slag. The slag-steel interactional was investigated. Samples of the steel were taken before and 10 min after slag was added. The samples were analyzed with a focus on the P and S distribution between the metal and slag and evaluated with a commercial standard lime product as a reference.

Expected long term effects

** Denna text är maskinöversatt ** The preliminary results show that it is possible to use the simulated EAC quicklime and dolomite as slag formers. The SaltX lime and dolomite can provide good sulfur refining in the smelting trials, while the phosphorus levels in the steel melt remained unchanged during the trials. Phosphorus purification is done with oxidizing slag, which was not the purpose of this study. The SaltX lime and dolomite calcined at 1050oC provided the best sulfur removal.

Approach and implementation

** Denna text är maskinöversatt ** As the first EAC production facility was under construction during this study, the lime and dolomite were prepared by laboratory scale electric calcination to mimic 3 different lime profiles from soft to hard burnt lime that can be achieved in an EAC.
