Melt joining of thermoplastic based composites and lightweight metal

Reference number
Coordinator Luleå tekniska universitet - Institutionen för teknikvetenskap och matematik
Funding from Vinnova SEK 500 000
Project duration December 2010 - December 2011
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The objective of the project is to create a joint between advanced thermoplastic composites and lightweight metals by means of thermal shrinkage and mechanical interlocking. Metal cast geometries suitable for assuring good adhesion to the composite, the composite/metal interface quality, and the composite internal structure as affected by the suggested thermal joining technique, will be investigated. The aim is to manufacture a joint with equal or better mechanical performance as conventionally designed joints, but with significantly reduced lead time.
