Purpose and goal

Many of Sweden´s villages have a traffic solution that does not meet today´s eligibility requirements for traffic safety and active mobility. There is a need to review how to increase active and safe mobility to create more attractive living environments. Aim of the project is to create living environments that enable vibrant, safe and attractive villages in the countryside by prioritizing active and safe mobility over through traffic. The project has its geographical starting point in Motala.

Expected effects and result

The result is a new way of working where several systems and structures are changed. With a holistic view the project will develop innovative ways of working for interaction between Motala municipality, the Swedish Transport Administration and Region Östergötland as well as a direct dialogue between politics and citizens to match the wishes of the residents in the current work process, budget, and implementation of the officials. The project covers both legal areas and physical measures.

Planned approach and implementation

The project develops, tests and evaluates solutions that transform the traffic environment in the villages into a safe and secure living environment with better conditions for active mobility than today. The change includes both the definition of a densely populated area, the right speed limit linked to the village´s living space and how supportive road design and technical solutions can contribute to greater freedom and mobility for non-motorists.
