Important results from the project
The purpose of the AFT- project is to simplify the everyday operation of gas turbines (aerospace, power generation, etc.). The simplification will reduce or eliminate the need for today´s extensive cleaning logistics that are labor intensive, involves risks and requires large investments in equipment and maintenance thereof. The goal is to show that AFT achieve equal fuel savings of as today´s cumbersome washing procedures. Thus, one can then reduce or eliminate them. Our tests with AFT shows very promising results.
Expected long term effects
The expected main effect of AFT is that a gas turbine will retain its compressor efficiency thus staying clean from contaminants present in the sucked-in air (compare a dirty ventilation system to a nominal clean one, the dirty system produces less air). Thus, a clean unit consumes less energy / fuel and therefore emit less emissions mainly CO2 and Nox. Several follow-ups on our test items with fiber optic inspection show that the purity is substantially improved and thus the expected positive outcome.
Approach and implementation
The project is run by actual tests on gas turbines in operation, i.e. application of the AFT and then monitoring the purity during planned stops. Monitoring takes place over a 5 year period from the time of application. During the trial period lab tests are performed in collaboration with KTH / SP to theoretically determine the effect of AFT regarding durability, hardness, temperature resistance and dirt repellent properties, etc.
