Venture International Joint Calls

Important results from the project

The purpose of LaserTau was to develop a scalable parallel kinematic robot cell for laser welding intended to handle large objects in the aerospace industry. A demonstrator cell with a working area of 3x1x1 meters has been designed, manufactured and verified. Initial welding experiments show that the requirements in terms of accuracy and repeatability are in line with the set specifications.

Expected long term effects

The results that emerged from the project show that the concept with this type of robot structucan have great advantages compared to conventional production methods. Scalability, functionality, precision and repeatability are properties that increase productivity and cost efficiency when it comes to manufacturing of large scale components in within the aerospace industry.

Approach and implementation

Some parts of the LaserTau-project are based on a previous prototype robot. The original plan was to upgrade the control system in a separate project application. This was not approved and It was decider to implement the control system rework in Lasertau. The cost and development time were therefor significantly increased compared to the initial budget. The project has been extended on two occasions in order to reach the set goals. The main reason for the extensions has been the prevailing corona situation, which has made it impossible to perform on-site work.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
