Purpose and goal
The objective is to evaluate the feasibility of developing high-performance bio-based jute composites for automotive applications. The focus is on lightweight and circular material solutions with a high content of jute combined with fossil-free binders and additives. The goal is to identify and validate material concepts that can meet automotive requirements for performance, durability, cost efficiency and recyclability, while creating a foundation for future industrial implementation.
Expected effects and result
The project will result in 3–5 evaluated bio-based material concepts based on jute and fossil-free binders, of which 1–2 solutions with potential for further industrial development. The project will increase knowledge about material performance, circularity and recycling possibilities. The project will also strengthen the collaboration between industry and academia and create a basis for future scale-up projects. Juteborg intends to commercialize the results as part of the JuTech(TM) portfolio.
Planned approach and implementation
The project is lead by Juteborg in collaboration with The University of Borås and Polestar. The work includes mapping of material and process alternatives, production of samples and evaluation against the automotive industry´s eligibility requirements on function, sustainability, circularity and cost-effectiveness. Through workshops, laboratory tests and multi-criteria analyses, the most promising concepts are identified as a basis for continued development and industrial implementation.
